Costco Bean and Cheese Del Real Pupusas Review

This was my first time trying the Del Real Pupusas from Costco. It was actually my first time trying Pupusas at all, so I had no idea what to expect.

I honestly didn’t think that they were going to be very good. After tasting them, I was very surprised how delicious they were. Even my kids loved them!

They look similar to a really thick corn tortilla. They are much thicker than a tortilla, but they are also not too thick.

What is a Pupusa?

Pupusas are a food that is made of thick corn tortilla that is filled with cheese and beans. They are a traditional dish from El Savador. They can sometimes be filled with different ingredients such as different types of meat and vegetables.

They are a very popular street food in El Salvador and are included on the menu in most local restaurants. These little treats are so popular that El Savador even has a National Pupusa Day on November 13th.

While Pupusas are not as popular in the U.S. as they are in Central America, they are quickly gaining popularity. After trying these, I can definitely see why people love them!

What are Pupusas Served With?

Traditionally Pupusas are served with a spicy cabbage mix, coleslaw or salsa. They are meant to be eaten with your hands, so you don’t even need to have a fork. Just add your toppings and take a bite.

If you are like me and you don’t really love cabbage or coleslaw, you can top your Pupusas with anything that you would like. On the package it shows these treats topped with shredded lettuce and guacamole. I topped mine with lettuce and salsa and it tasted amazing. It even shows an example of a breakfast Pupusa on the package that is topped with a fried egg.

How Do You Make the Pupusas?

You can cook the Pupusas on the stove top or in the air fryer.

Stove Top: Preheat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Unwrap and place Pupusas into the skillet. Heat while flipping periodically for about 4-6 minutes or until temperature reaches 165 F.

Air Fryer:Preheat air fryer to 350 F. Cook 1 Pupusa for 8 minutes or until temperature reaches 165 F.

Cooking The Pupusas

Since I was cooking more than one Pupusa, I decided to cook using the stove top recipe. I placed three Pupusas in a heated skillet over medium heat. I cooked them for about 6 minutes total.

Taste

I had no idea what to expect when tasting these Pupusas. I was very surprised that these were so good. They have a corn tortilla like outer shell and they are stuffed with beans and cheese.

The bean and cheese filling tasted really good, and it wasn’t spicy at all. You could eat these just plain without toppings, but I put some shredded lettuce and salsa on mine.

I felt like the spicy salsa made it taste even better because it gave it some extra flavor. These are also very filling. I was actually full after eating just one, but since they were so good I ended up eating a second one. My entire family loved these! Even my kids, who are very picky eaters.

Final Thoughts

This is one of my newest favorite Costco Finds! The Del Real Pupusas from Costco were definitely a hit in my house and I can’t wait to eat them again.

This package of 10 easily fed my entire family dinner for the night and we even had a few left over. Since this pack was just $11.79 at Costco, this makes for a super easy to prepare and very affordable dinner.

These would also be perfect for a quick snack. If you are wondering if these Pupusas are good, I would 100 % recommend that you try them.
